GALESBURG - Insight Communications is aiming to "leave its competition in the dust" with an upgrade of its high-speed Internet service.A news release from Insight touts download speeds of up to 10 megabits per second, or Mbps, and upload speeds of up to 1 Mbps. In practical terms, what does this mean? According to the cable company, "the upgraded service called Insight Broadband 10.0 is six times faster than 1.5 Mbps DSL service and up to 170 times faster than a 56 kbps dial-up modem."
John Niebur, vice president of Insight's Peoria district, which includes Galesburg, Knoxville and East Galesburg, said in the prepared statement high-speed Internet has passed the novelty stage.
"Speed is no longer a luxury for Internet users - it has become essential as more and more consumers download huge video and music files and send high-resolution photos in e-mail," Neibur said. "Just look at the popularity of YouTube, iTunes and other sites that offer streaming video and music. It just makes so much sense for consumers to have a fast Internet connection to take advantage of these services. And we now have the fastest service around - no one even comes close."
The new service is being rolled out on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis from now until the end of the year at no additional cost to customers. Customers will be notified by mail as the date of their upgrade draws near."
Kim Sheetz, Insight's public and government relations manager in Galesburg, said Windows 2000 and newer computers will be able to accommodate the Insight Broadband 10.0 service.
Insight officials say the ability to download huge files creates a need for more storage, so Internet Broadband 10.0 includes increased storage capacity. Customers have access to six separate e-mail accounts, each with a full 1GB of storage per mailbox, a total of 6GB.
Insight has set up a micro-site at www.blowsDSLaway.com to demonstrate the speed of Insight Broadband 10.0.
